Getting Started

March 1, 2018

Good Morning DearHearts,

It is said that a journey begins with the first step.  I want to expand that to, a journey begins with the first thought about the first step and then active movement towards the journey’s beginning.

Now a journey can be many things. My dear friend Webster defines journey in many ways, including a day’s work and a pilgrimage.  These seem like two varied things with not much in common; however, both must be started the same way, with a first “step”.

Getting started for either a specific task or a pilgrimage can be assaulted by a tiny fear thought emanating from the ego mind.  In the case of a chore the fear may present itself as delay, procrastination or lethargy. I can sometimes find a myriad of preoccupying thoughts that keep me from beginning weekly housekeeping. By the way, are you surprised that fear masquerades as delay and procrastination?

Anything that basically keeps us trapped in the past comes from a fear of moving forward into the unknown. This is why my procrastination to either clean, do my taxes or sit down and write comes from fear.  I cannot have any forward movement in my life, unless I am actually moving forward through my actions.

To begin any new endeavor and then to stay with it until it is complete requires commitment to the unknown and that means overcoming any fear that arises. Fear is the language of the ego mind that has a litany of reasons why progress and change should be abandoned no matter the cost.

A dear friend of mine, Drew Eric, faced his fear and a very raucous ego two years ago when he went to Europe to walk the El Camino de Santiago and then back pack through the continent for 8 months. He faced his doubts, fears and threats on his being to have a self discovery adventure.  His pilgrimage began with his almost constant question, “can I do this?”  Yes, he could and did.

A path to spiritual Self discovery must be traveled; just as a beautiful walkway in a garden must be traversed in order to experience the beauty that awaits. Of course one can choose to delay the exploration of the garden as well as the exploration of Self.  In both cases the hesitancy to begin the journey comes from the fearful idea of what might be encountered along the pathway. If there was a guarantee that the journey would most certainly lead to a beautiful destination, would you take the risk?

The spiritual journey will lead each of us within so we can finally experience the peace that comes at the end of belief in separation.  A Course in Miracles has many names for this, one is Salvation.

“Salvation is immediate. Unless you so perceive it, you will be afraid of it, believing that the risk of loss is great between the time it’s (salvation’s) purpose is made yours and it’s (salvation’s) effects will come to you.” ACIM/Text/ Chap 26:VIII:3:1-2

Once we commit to the correction of our thought system, fully and completely, we will know the peace of freedom and the joy of Oneness.

It’s only the first step that’s holding us back.

I want to share a link for a personal “first new step” of my goal to share this journey.
