Completion

October 19, 2017

Good Morning DearHearts,

In the film Jerry McGuire, one of the most memorable movie love lines is uttered, “You complete me.”

The first response to this line was thought to be, it’s sooo sweet.  I’m sure many a couple said this line to each other, perhaps in their wedding vows.  However, there came a time when this declaration of love became interpreted as meaning that one is incomplete without another by their side.  The memorable phrase then became more cringe worthy than romantic.

I don’t really believe the interpretation of incompletion was what the script writer had in mind when he/she penned the script.  Many movie quotes have become part of the vernacular because they are memorable, for instance “we’re not in Kansas anymore” or “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”.  However, very few movie lines have become as controversial as this one.

Of course, I am always trying to see things in another “light”. So, I offer an alternative interpretation of this line.

We actually are incomplete and not because we may not have a body sitting next to us.  If we believe our minds are separate, we actually are only half of our True Self.

I did some research to support my viewpoint and here is what I found.

Characteristics of being co-dependent include but are not limited to:

Being reactive-when anyone is operating from the ego mind, reactivity is the way the ego defends itself and its position. The way to heal this behavior is by being in my right mind (with God).

Control– when in the ego mind, needing to be in control is the only way to be.  The ego tells us “trust no-one”. When we are aligned with God, trust comes easily.

Dependent on what is “outside” – when the ego mind is in control, we are constantly looking for the special thing out there to feel worthy. However, when we are aligned with God we realize there is nothing “out there” that is of more worth that what is “in here”.

Low self esteem – the ego self is dependent on keeping us from uncovering the many veils that have been placed between it and our True Self.  But it is very possible to shift from the littleness of the ego to the magnificence of our Self by reconnecting with Source (God).

In this sense we are incomplete without God in our heart and life. We can and should acknowledge we in fact are incomplete without God and according to ACIM; God is incomplete without YOU.

“Whenever you question your value, say God Himself is incomplete without me.” ACIM Text Chapter 9

“Would you refuse to take the function of completing God, when all He wills is that you be complete?”  ACIM Workbook pII 7

One more thing, if I truly see you as my Holy Brother then I am indeed incomplete without you by my side.  Admittedly, this may not have been the meaning behind the movie utterance, but as I said I am offering another way to see it.

If you reside in the South Florida area, you can also attend one of my ACIM groups, where we promote completeness. You can contact me by replying to this blog.

And Remember,

There is Unconditional LOVE Here For US Now.
